The Global Water Crisis– Coming to our Great Lakes
The Global Water Crisis– Coming to our Great Lakes

Start Date: Mar. 26, 2013
Time: 6:00 PM

Rock Valley College will welcome renowned water expert Maude Barlow as the guest speaker for this year’s David H. Caskey Memorial Lecture on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. in the Physical Education Center (PEC) on RVC’s main campus (3301 North Mulford Road). Barlow’s lecture is entitled The Global Water Crisis– Coming to our Great Lakes. The world is running out of available water supplies and the crisis is coming closer to home. The Great Lakes are in serious condition due to over-extraction, climate change, pollution, invasive species and energy exploration on and around them. Maude Barlow will talk about the causes of this crisis, including the false view that water is a “commodity” to be used for exploitation. Maude Barlow is the National Chairperson of the Council of Canadians and chairs the board of Washington-based Food and Water Watch. In 2008/2009, she served as Senior Advisor on Water to the 63rd President of the United Nations General Assembly and was a leader in the campaign to have water recognized as a human right by the UN. She is also the author of dozens of reports, as well as 16 books, including the international best seller Blue Covenant: The Global Water Crisis and The Coming Battle for the Right to Water. Admission to the event is free and open to the entire community. There will also be two free showings of Blue Gold, the 2009 film which is based on Maude Barlow’s book of the same name. The film showings will be at 1:00 and 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19 in the Woodward Technology Center (WTC), room 117, on RVC’s main campus.
